Where technology meets material culture

S/ALON Budapest is Hungary’s flagship design fair — a stage where exhibitors compete for visitors’ time and attention. Rather than decorating a stand, we set out to build an immersive experience that would stop people mid-step and start a conversation about how technology shapes the spaces we live in.

We took the project from first concept to opening night. Working with media artist Dávid Szauder, we created a bespoke AI-generated wallpaper at the intersection of ornament, abstraction, and machine learning — inspired by Szauder’s porcelain sculptures and childhood memories of figurines we were forbidden to touch. We paired it with antique furniture and contemporary objects so that visitors would feel continuity between past and future material cultures rather than a rupture. The tablecloth was made of moss, the greenery looked like aliens landing, and see-through contemporary chairs sat around a baroque dining table — a space where the uncanny and the familiar coexisted.

From installation to international production

Our installation became the most visited destination at the fair. Visitors lingered — we spent our days in conversation with curious people from all backgrounds, as the concept resonated well beyond the design community. S/ALON Budapest featured an extensive interview with us and Dávid on their main landing page.

What began as a single experimental stand grew into something far larger. The collaboration with Szauder evolved into the Spheres wallpaper collection, manufactured by Tecnografica with global distribution, exhibited at Milan Design Week, Berlin Design Week, and Maison & Objet Paris, and in 2025 awarded EDIDA Product of the Year — proof that conceptual boldness and commercial viability are not opposites.

„Freeform.ourcollective presents a special concept. The dreamlike installation is based around a wallpaper they created with the help of artificial intelligence in collaboration with artist Dávid Szauder, a unique, genre-creating application of the technology that is so popular today.”
